Poetry. The found poem below, entitled "The Language of America," was written using words and phrases from historical American and British newspapers, to communicate a thorough answer to the question "What does it mean to be an outsider in society?" through many voices. Language was borrowed from editorials, news articles, opinion pieces, and advertisements. Some language represents the voices of actual outsiders, but most of the language was appropriated from the mainstream to give the speaker their voice through subversion. I spent hours looking for the newspapers that covered the span of modern American history and collected the best phrases and quotes as I read. The most powerful phrases became the poem you see below (Poem is read from left to right, stanza by stanza). Under the poem, you can scroll through the newspaper articles that were used to write the poem.
