Word Cloud. This word cloud was created using the full text of Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and exhibits the most commonly used words in the novel, including "come," "see," "kin," "one," "men," "way," "wuz," and "town." The word cloud emphasizes the use of African American Vernacular English dialect in the novel, as well as poignant themes such as Janie's relationships and aspects of community. The gavel form was chosen to mirror Janie's conflict with the law when she is taken to court for "murdering" her husband in self-defense during the storm when he becomes rabid after being bitten by a dog. To create the word cloud, I used the online tool Wordle and pasted the entire text of the novel into the program and manipulated the shape, colors, and style.
